Substance Use Disorders in Hospital Care

This ECHO meets Wednesdays, noon-1 p.m.

This 12 session ECHO series will help build or improve care systems to effectively treat addiction in a hospital setting. Topics may include:

  • Understanding substance use disorder (SUD): Brain disease of addiction
  • Medication for opioid use disorder, including buprenorphine and methadone
  • Community SUD treatment settings
  • Acute pain management in a patient with substance use disorder
  • Managing challenging hospital behaviors: active drug use in the hospital
  • Peers in hospital settings
  • Trauma informed care and harm reduction as part of hospital care
  • Managing methamphetamine use disorder in hospital care

We will select up to 40 clinicians and hospital staff who care for hospitalized adults with SUD and can champion change in their organizations. Clinicians (prescribing MD, DO, NP, PAs), nurses, social workers, pharmacists, discharge planners, behavioral health specialists, administrators, and quality improvement specialists are encouraged to register. Ideally staff will participate as part of a hospital-based team that includes a clinician and one or more other staff member. Participants will be selected based on their interest and geographic distribution throughout Oregon.
