Pain Management and Substance Use Disorder in Dental Settings

Wednesdays 12:30 - 1:30 p.m Pacific Time, April 12 and 19; May 10 and 17; June 14, 21, and 28

The purpose of this 7-session program is to build the capacity of dentists and their teams to identify and manage patients with oral pain or substance use disorders in the dental setting. Topics will include:

  • Learnings from ECHO 1.0
  • Lived experiences of patients with SUDs  
  • Trauma-Informed Care for patients with SUDs
  • Pain management in patients on alcohol and benzodiazepines
  • Pain management in patients on methamphetamine and cannabis
  • Managing dental care of vulnerable populations with SUDs 
  • Strategies for managing dental anxiety in patients with SUDs

We will select community-based dentists, other oral health professionals, OHSU School of Dentistry faculty, OHSU dental preceptors, OHSU School of Dentistry residents, and other relevant health care professionals to participate based on their interest in the program, geographic distribution, and ability to commit to attend the sessions. Community-based dentists and OHSU dental preceptors are encouraged to invite one other staff member such as a behavioral health specialist, dental hygienist, dental assistant, or practice manager to participate in the sessions with them.
