Chronic Pain and Opioids

This 16-session ECHO series is designed to help clinicians and their teams provide enhanced pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment for chronic pain in medical settings. Topics will include:

  • The biopsychosocial approach to managing pain
  • Understanding and assessing different types of pain
  • Appropriate and ethical treatment plans for patients with opioid use disorder
  • Evidence-based behavioral interventions for chronic pain
  • Managing opioid tapers
  • Identifying patients who may benefit from buprenorphine products
  • Distinguishing between opioid dependence and opioid use disorder

We will select up to 40 clinicians and primary care staff who are in a position to champion change in their organizations. Clinicians (prescribing MD, DO, NP, PA), nurses, social workers, pharmacists, behavioral health specialists, practice managers, and quality improvement specialists are encouraged to register. Participants will be selected based on their interest, geographic distribution throughout Oregon, and ability to commit to the sessions. This course is part of the OHSU Addiction Medicine ECHO certificate program; participants who express interest in completing the certificate program will receive priority access.

Accreditation: Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit: OHSU School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum 16.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
